Do You Think Internet Businesses Can Grow in a Poor Economy?
Starting an Online Business June 23rd. 2010, 12:48pm
Everyone feels that in a slow economy, that people are not buying and that it is the wrong time to start an Internet business. This is not the truth. You may have to work a little bit harder, or do a little bit more than you would in regular times, but you can build a great Internet business and grow it during bad times!
Regardless of what business you are in, there is a way to combat every excuse that people can come up with and get the sale you are looking for. One of the biggest things is your own mindset. If you believe that no one is going to buy your product, they won’t. If you believe in it, and are able to show others how wonderful it is, they are going to buy it as well. Once you start getting it into other people’s hands, they will start raving about it, and your business will be off and running.
People Aren’t Buying – Are you sure they aren’t? Is everyone in the same industry making no money, or is it just you? If it is just you, you need to figure out what you are doing wrong. See if you can make friends with some of these people that are doing well and ask what they are doing. Maybe you are pricing things too low, thinking it will encourage sales, but people are actually questioning why you are selling the item so cheaply and think it is inferior.
The economy is depressed – Yes, it is, but people are still buying. Stores like Wal-Mart are not shutting their doors; they are still doing a booming business. Make sure that you are offering something that these bottom basement stores are not offering, customer service and a quality product! People are willing to pay more for these items, and depending on what it is, they budget for it and still want to buy it. People do not just give up their favorite items; they just plan and budget for them a bit better. Make sure you are providing a great service and they will continue to return to you for their needs.
Product – As with any business, Internet or not, it is important that you are offering the right product. If you are trying to sell milk, you likely will not have a very successful business. It is important that you sell a product that may be harder to find, or something that you can offer a great price and service with, due to your smaller size and great customer service. If you do things correctly, your business will boom regardless of the economy.
When the economy is poor, a lot of businesses end up shutting down due to their perception that they will not be able to weather the storm, and that they best get out while they are still able to. This is not true, and if you manage your business properly and go the extra mile for your customers, you will continue to build your business regardless of the economy. This must continue even when the economy improves, as bad service will lose your customers faster than the economy.
