As a smart shopper, you probably don’t spend a lot of money or invest a lot of time into something you haven’t looked at.  You may be reading an affiliate marketing book, following press stories about Google’s developments in advertising, and more.  It’s important to do the same when choosing an autoresponder, and to review your choice of autoresponders periodically through the life of your business.

It’s important to check product reviews—if they’re from a reputable third party, all the better!  It’s important to check several reviews, if possible.  User comments are helpful, but if they’re 100% positive, and posted on a page sponsored by the company selling the product, you should be a little bit suspicious.

When you’re looking at an autoresponder review, you’ll want to ask all the same questions you ask when looking at a review for anything else—only closer and more so.  The autoresponder is an extremely important part of your business.  It’s how you keep in touch with your customers.  It can help you turn a curious visitor into a regular customer.  You need a top of the line autoresponder, and checking multiple reviews can help you find one.

What are you looking for in these reviews?  Functionality, mostly.   You need an autoresponder that does a lot more than just send an email to a potential customer.  Your autoresponder has to be clever enough to generate emails that aren’t weeded out as spam.  It has to be easy to set up and keep going.  It needs to provide a series of automatically generated responses as part of a marketing program, and it needs to let you blast out email newsletters and other bulletins as well.

Each person, and each small business, has specific needs, so there isn’t a single a single autoresponder program that is best for everyone.  You’ll need to look around a little and find the one that works for you.  And don’t forget about your network!  What do your business contacts and colleagues think of their autoresponders?

But beware of “analysis paralysis”.  You don’t want to spend so much time researching autoresponders that your business plans grind to a halt.  Some people even start second-guessing themselves, obsessing over the smallest details and worrying that whatever decision they make will be wrong.

Choosing an autoresponder is not a lifetime commitment.  Relax, and enjoy shopping around.  If the one you pick turns out to not fit your needs, you can just pick another one.

And that brings up an important point.  Remember that there are different autoresponders because different businesses have different needs.  Well, your business has different needs, too!  Over time, as your business grows and develops and maybe even diversifies, your needs will change.

So, you should periodically review your autoresponder.  Is it meeting all of your current needs, or just the ones you had when you first selected it?  Has it been operating more or less trouble free?  Is it giving you the statistical and other analytical reports you need to gauge your email marketing effectiveness?

If not, you don’t necessarily need to go with a totally new one.  Your current provider may have an upgraded or alternative product that suits you better.  This provides the advantage of easily migrating your work to an upgraded product from the same provider rather than having to start everything over from scratch with a new provider.
