Blogging, Inspiring Articles, Social Media, Tips and Tools No Comments »

I spent several years in the military and fell in love with the use of acronyms. My favorite during my military years was The 5 P’s (prior proper planning prevents poor performance). If you are involved with social media, I am now going to give you an operator precedence – NESTOL. No, it does not spell a word, but you can remember it very clearly by stating the following: Never Express Stale Tiresome Opinions Liberally. Now, that is a way to remember this acronym, but what the letters actually stand for are as follows: Read the rest of this entry »

Tightrope Lessons from the Big Top

At moments like this, it feels like I have it all.  I am building a successful business from home doing what I love, using my experience and creativity to offer help to others, and I get to do that with my dog napping under my chair and my husband sitting beside me.  Of course, he nudges his way into my train of thought every few minutes to show off the new feature he just unlocked on his video game, and the dog will be Read the rest of this entry »

Think in terms of military tactics. I like this idea first because I am a former military operator who specialized in guerilla warfare training. Now, before you go to sleep, remember something – every great business strategy employed since the industrial revolution can be traced to military strategy. There are tomes of work on military strategy which is adapted to warfare, most notably The Art of War by Sun Tzu. Read the rest of this entry »

Giants Topple, Your Business Doesn’t Have To!

Food For Thought, News No Comments »

In 1996, the Down Jones Industrial Average celebrated its 100th birthday. Of the original companies listed in 1896, only General Electric had survived to take part in the celebration. Fourteen companies mentioned in the Tom Peters book, “In Search of Excellence” had lost their luster within 4 years of the book’s publishing. Jean Jacques Schreiber, in his bestselling book , American Challenge, told his countrymen “Swallow your pride, imitate America or accept her dominance forever.” Then by 1975, it was Japan, Inc. Everyone wanted to jump on the band wagon of the Kaizen philosophy. The point is that the game is forever changing. Read the rest of this entry »

Tell Her About It…Your Business That Is….

Food For Thought, Fundamentals, Inspiring Articles, Small Business No Comments »

I have always loved Billy Joel’s music starting with the album The Stranger. Nearly every song in the Billy Joel catalogue is great, but I absolutely hated the song “Tell Her About It”. I thought it sounded like a show tune “diddy” that no self respecting rock & roll radio station would ever play. However, as much as I hated the song itself, there is some real truth to the lyrics, which were written during Joel’s marriage to Christie Brinkley. And there is no truer wisdom when it comes to business. Read the rest of this entry »
